Knock Shrine Bookshop - About Us

Print this Page

The idea of providing a religious books’ service for pilgrims and others first came to prominence in the late Msgr. James Horan’s time in Knock which spanned the period from 1963 to 1986. He believed that there was a need to provide such a service at the national Shrine for priests, religious, students, pilgrims and tourists. He wanted it to be a quality and comprehensive service, one that would meet the needs of those who would be looking for good, wholesome literature.

At first, the service was provided on a small scale, from a storage area at the Parish Church. It became the feeder for book supplies to the Shrine Offices in the Grounds and to the back of the Parish Church. When the Basilica was built there were two small bookshops, one in the North Ambulatory and one in the South.

The late Msgr. Dominick Grealy was Parish Priest of Knock and Director of the Shrine from 1986 until 2002.  He felt that there was a need to extend and develop the book service further. After consultation with people who worked at the Shrine, he eventually selected a site for a brand new Religious Books’ Centre across from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and adjoining St. John’s Rest & Care Centre.

The location was ideal and as time passed, it became most successful. For this reason, it soon became clear that it would have to be extended further in order to provide more space both for a greater supply of books and also to facilitate the huge numbers of people visiting it. Plans were put in place in 2002 for an extension before Msgr. Grealy retired and the work was completed in 2003, with the full support and blessing of the new Parish Priest, Msgr. Joseph Quinn.

The greatly enlarged and computerised bookshop, providing a Mail Order Service and open seven days a week, is both spacious and elegant. The beautiful woodwork in the ceilings, floors and shelving gives a richness and feeling of warmth to the interior, enhanced by the novel and striking artificial lighting. The numerous categories of books are signposted  both in English and in Irish. Laser and major Credit Cards are accepted.

The bookshop also provides Rosary Beads made exclusively for Knock Shrine  by Ghirelli , Italy, Statues,  Medallions, Medals, Holy Water Bottles & Fonts , Key Rings & Magnets, Postcards and Calendars, Catholic Newspapers, Prayer Cards and Bookmarkers, Leaflets, Full Colour Pictures & Posters, Catholic Magazines, Religious Videos, DVD’s and Computer Software.
