The Tour takes you through the beautifully landscaped Knock Shrine grounds visiting all places of interest including the Apparition Chapel and original Gable Wall, Papal Cross, Basilica, and Chapel of Reconciliation.
The purpose of the Tour is to help the visitor to get a greater understanding of the Apparition. By giving an account of the lifestyles endured by the people of Ireland, particularly the west of Ireland around the time of the Apparition, it is easier to visualize the economic and social climate at that time.
The Apparition at Knock is unique in the world and all the events of that evening of the 21st August 1879 are included in the Tour. There are some remarkable coincidences that warrant a mention which help shed light on the fact that the Apparition should have taken place in this quiet village of Knock.
Some of the dominant figures associated with the development of the Shrine are highlighted including: Archdeacon Cavanagh who was the parish priest at Knock Shrine at the time of the Apparition; Monsignor James Horan an extraordinary man who was responsible for many of the much needed developments at the Shrine; Dame Judy Coyne and her husband Liam who founded the Knock Shrine Society in 1935 to promote Knock and the Apparition.
The Papal Cross where Pope John Paul 11 said mass on the centenary of the Apparition in 1979 is visited when one and half million pilgrims congregated to greet him. The visit of Mother Teresa of Calcutta which took place in June 1993 is another special event that is highlighted.
