Bealtaine Festival at Knock Museum

Throughout the month of May, Knock Museum will be hosting a number of Outreach Workshops to celebrate 'Bealtaine: Celebrating Creativity in Older Age'.

The purpose of the Bealtaine Festival is to encourage older members of the community to get involved in creative events within their area and to provide them with an outlet for meeting new people and having new and enjoyable experiences.

All members of the public as well as Active Retirement groups are invited to take part in this exciting programme. Knock Museum is delighted to announce the following workshops to coincide with Bealtaine, which will take place every Tuesday Afternoon throughout the month of May between 1.00 - 2.30pm.
Early booking is advised to secure a place, as numbers may be limited.

Knock Museum to host ‘Learning from Art’ from the National Gallery of Ireland  

For the month of March Knock Museum will host a temporary exhibition entitled ‘Learning from Art’ from the National Gallery of Ireland. The exhibition is the result of an outreach programme conducted between 1999-2003 by the education department at the National Gallery. The purpose of the programme was to encourage students to observe and engage with the permanent collection of artwork on display and respond to this work in the form of an artwork, a poem, or a piece of prose.  

To launch this exciting exhibition, Castlebar-based artist Sinéad Wall will be conducting an on-site outreach workshop, which will be attended by local secondary school art students on Wednesday 3 March from 1. 30- 2. 20 pm. All are welcome to attend.

 

St. Brigid’s Day Cross-Making Event at St. John’s Rest & Care 

To celebrate St. Brigid’s Day on February 1st, Knock Museum held a cross-making event at St. John Rest & Care centre.

This event was attended by 6th class Knock National School as well the day care groups from St. John’s Rest & Care centre.

Participants learned to make a variety of St. Brigid’s crosses to celebrate the heritage of this tradition.

Knock Museum - Special Commemorative Exhibition

Knock Museum are hosting a special exhibition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Papal Visit to Knock in 1979. It includes original film footage of the day in Knock featuring many local people, the Vestments worn by Pope John Paul II while celebrating Mass in Knock, the Papal Chair, gifts presented by the Pope and souvenirs and photographs of that very historic day. The exhibition also includes local memories of the event and audio recordings of the sermon delivered by Pope John Paul II on that day which includes his now famous words: ‘Here I am at the goal of my journey to Ireland – the Shrine of Our Lady at Knock’. The exhibition will be officially opened on Wednesday 30 September at 12 noon by Monsignor Quinn and all are welcome to attend. It will run for the month of October and the museum is open daily from 10-6pm.

Knock Museum Hosts Mini Film Festival

To celebrate Heritage Week 2009, Knock Museum will screen a series of short films spanning the years 1936-1979 and featuring Knock Shrine, Knock village and numerous local people.

The films will be shown courtesy of the Irish Film Archive and will be screened on Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August from 6-7.30pm on both evenings. The films will have live musical accompaniment and will be followed by light refreshments. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Knock Museum, which is located in Knock Shrine Grounds, was recently awarded Full Accreditation in the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland making it only the seventh museum in Ireland to have achieved this status. The museum also scooped two national awards in the 2009 Museum of the Year Awards.

Heritage Week is coordinated by the Heritage Council and the aim of it is to build awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. The week runs from 22-30 August 2009.

 

 

Three National Awards for Knock Museum

Knock Museum was one of three museums to be awarded Full Accreditation in the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland at a ceremony in Dublin on May 18th making it one of a select group of seven museums in Ireland to be awarded this status. The programme acknowledges standards of excellence in all areas of museum practice including Care of Collections, Visitor Services, Exhibition and Education. Curator of Knock Museum, Grace Mulqueen said that full accreditation is a major achievement for any museum and especially for Knock Museum being one of the first museums in Ireland to reach these standards of excellence. She complemented her dedicated staff at the museum and thanked the museum’s governing body for their on-going support and commitment.

Knock Museum also scooped two national awards in the ‘Museum of the Year Awards’ ceremony which again were held on May 18th to coincide with International Museums Day. The Awards, which were hosted by the Heritage Council in partnership with the Northern Ireland Museums Council, highlight and celebrate the achievements of museums and collections both North and South. Knock Museum won the Highly Commended award in the overall 2009 Museum of the Year, category making it one of the top two museums in the country. “It was a surprise and honour to win this award which had over seventy entries from museums across the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland,” said Ms. Mulqueen.

Knock Museum also won an award in the ‘Caring for Collections’ category for overall commitment to Care of Collections. This award recognises ongoing preventive conservation measures together with overall care of collections. James Campbell, Conservation Technician at Knock Museum said “The achievement of this award acknowledges progressive improvements in Best Collections Care including: Documentation, storage systems, exhibition, preventive conservation measures, staff training and professional conservation of priority objects.”

Knock Museum tells the unique story of what happened in a small rural village in 1879 and yet impacted on millions of people ever since. The museum is open daily 10-6pm.

Museum Guidebook

The museum guidebook, which was funded the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism, presents the treasures of the museum including artefacts, information, photographs and documents. It includes original hand-written testimonies of the Knock Apparition of 1879 published for the first time.

Museum standards programme for Ireland

Knock Museum was one of just five museums to receive Interim Accreditation status in 2007 in the new Museum Standards Programme for Ireland developed by the Heritage Council. The Programme consists of a series of detailed and rigorous standards that recognise international best practice in museums in areas such as Caring for Collections, Museum Management, Documentation and Visitor Services. In 2008 Knock Museum applied for full accreditation and is hopeful of achieving this award in 2009 making it one of the first museums in Ireland to do so.

 

 

Conservation

At Knock Museum Conservation and Care of Collections is a major focus of our work. Priority objects in the collection are selected on a yearly basis for professional conservation and display. These projects are part-funded by the Heritage Council.

St. Patrick’s Banner presented in 1880 by the first organised pilgrimage to Knock by the members of the Confraternity of the Holy Family connected with the Redemptorist Church, Limerick city.

This statue was presented to Knock Shrine in 1880 by Miss McKee, Dublin in thanksgiving for a cure attributed to Our Lady of Knock.
